Gilbert Road Bridge at Salt River

Northbound Travel on Gilbert Road Reduced to One Lane at Thomas Road

The Maricopa County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) Gilbert Road Bridge project is underway at the Salt River crossing. In preparation for phase one of construction, northbound travel on Gilbert Road will be reduced to one lane from Thomas Road to State Route 87 (Beeline Highway).

Drivers should also be alert for flaggers assisting trucks crossing Gilbert Road in the project area.

The one-lane northbound restriction begins on Monday, January 9th at 5:00 a.m. and will be in place at all hours including weekends and holidays. The lane restriction continues until early March 2023.

Please allow for extra time for travel, watch for construction workers and equipment, obey traffic control signs and slow down in the work zone.

The Maricopa County Department of Transportation, in cooperation with the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community (SRPMIC) and the City of Mesa, is constructing a new bridge over the Salt River.

The new four-lane Gilbert Road Bridge will replace the existing two-lane bridge and low water crossing, which can become flooded during high water flows in the Salt River. Located on Gilbert Road between Thomas Road and State Route 87 (Beeline Highway), the bridge will be built in phases and provide two northbound and two southbound lanes. The project includes new pavement, signage and improved drainage in the project area.

Occasional lane restrictions can be anticipated during construction. One lane of travel for both north- and southbound traffic will be accommodated during the construction to ensure a connection to State Route 87.

In the event a full closure occurs due to flooding or water releases by the Salt River Project, MCDOT will provide recommended alternative routes for travel.

Gilbert Road Bridge construction is anticipated to be completed in 2025.
