The Ashbrook Wash Drainage Improvement Project is now complete. The Flood Control District of Maricopa County and the Town of Fountain Hills partnered on the project. The improvements were constructed by C. S. Construction, Inc.
The project included upgrades to pipe culverts for Ashbrook Wash at Saguaro Boulevard and Bayfield Drive, which now provide over 6 times the flow capacity of the previous culverts. To increase flow capacity within the wash, densely-spaced palm trees that constricted water flow, were moved downstream of Saguaro Boulevard. In addition, new curbside inlets were constructed to remove stormwater from Saguaro Boulevard and Bayfield Drive.
"I learned about this problem and the need for a solution very early after taking office," Supervisor Steve Chucri said. "The Capital Improvement Program within the Flood Control District is an example of local government collaboration in the best interest of our shared constituents. I am pleased this improvement will protect property and residents in the area."
Prior to the project improvements, rain events would often cause stormwater to flow over Bayfield Drive. Occasionally, the flow would overtop the wash and flow down Bayfield Drive. During larger storms, approximately 11 homes were at risk for flooding.
"We’re thrilled that the Ashbrook Wash drainage improvements are complete," said Grady Miller, Fountain Hills Town Manager. "We have already seen a huge improvement during recent rain events with the handling of the water flows in the wash."
The project will also result in a reduction of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) 100-year floodplain of Ashbrook Wash. Although the processing and issuance of the revised floodplain map by FEMA may take 6 to 12 months, flood insurance coverage may no longer be required for homes that would then be located outside the new floodplain.
