[ARCHIVED] Maricopa County Approves Queen Creek Funding of Library Services

The Maricopa County Library District (MCLD) Board of Directors today approved an amendment that will give more people access to the services at the Queen Creek Library. The agreement with the Town of Queen Creek funds Maricopa County library cards for all Queen Creek residents, including those who live in Pinal County.

Queen Creek is growing and straddles the county line with more annexation in Pinal County possible. Town leaders want to provide the same services to all residents and worked with the county to come up with a solution so all individuals receive the same library services, regardless of whether they live in Maricopa or Pinal County. Through this agreement, which the Town approved last week, the Town will fund library cards for the residents outside of Maricopa County.

“Today’s vote showcases what happens when governments work together,” said Maricopa County District 1 Supervisor Denny Barney. “Without this funding, people who live in the Town of Queen Creek but happen to be over the county line, would have two choices: pay an annual $50 fee to access the Queen Creek Library, or drive more than 35 miles to the closest Pinal County Library. We came together and found a better option.”

“Libraries are a cornerstone of our communities,” said MCLD Director Cindy Kolaczynski. “We’re proud to have found a solution that makes it easier for Queen Creek residents to take advantage of all we have to offer.”

About the Queen Creek Library

The Queen Creek Library, located at the northwest corner of Ellsworth and Ocotillo Roads, opened in November 2008 and is one of 18 locations in the Maricopa County Library District (MCLD). It operates through an intergovernmental agreement (IGA) between MCLD and the Town of Queen Creek. Under the IGA, the Town of Queen Creek provides and is responsible for operations and maintenance of the library building. MCLD provides books, electronic resources, staffing, equipment, programs, and other materials necessary for the provision of library services.
